Last week I was training a group of business owners in my 80/20 Business Coaching Program and one of the first questions I asked the group was:

Are your surviving or are you thriving in your business?

In business there are ALWAYS times where we must tighten our belts and do whatever is necessary to survive. It’s a state of nature. But, in my experience it is much easier to stay in our protective “shells” and turn a short season of “survival” into a daily habit.

Said another way, survival is like playing defense in a sporting event. Yes, it’s necessary but if we only focus on playing defense we will never win the game. Thriving, on the other hand, is the offense and that is where the scoring occurs. That is how we “win” the game and that is the real purpose of getting into our businesses to begin with.

I challenge you to look at your business and project forward over the next twelve months. Do you want to be exactly where you are today or do you want to make some evolutionary changes that will propel your business to the next level? Whatever your goal is for the coming year make sure it is specific and measurable. Then, break down the process of achieving that goal into daily steps. In fact, make those daily steps so easy that you know, without a doubt, you will accomplish them each day.

Achieving goals is like building a cobblestone road from point “A” to point “B”. Each day you get up and lay down one more brick in the road; not focused on the many miles ahead. Just focus on that ONE brick today and that’s it. You will be done for the day but you have at least taken a step towards your overall goal for the year.

Take a minute to write down at least ONE big goal you want to achieve in the next six or twelve months. Then, lay down that first “brick” to start the process of getting there!
